Types of Breast Implants Used
Breast
augmentation can be performed with saline or silicone breast implants.
Saline implants can be placed in the axilla (underarms) through
an incision less than an inch long. Other incision choices for saline
implants include the underwire or the areola area.
Cohesive Silicone (“Gummy Bear”) implants
can be placed through an incision in the underwire area. Patients
having silicone breast implants are required to enroll in a clinical
research study and must be followed on a regular basis.
Where your breast implant surgery will be performed:
Dr Del Vecchio performs breast augmentation at several locations
to suit your needs:
North Shore, New Hampshire, Maine: North Shore Medical
Center is an ideal location.
South Shore, Rhode Island and Cape Cod: Quincy Medical
Center, or Cape Cod Hospital.
If you prefer a Boston location: Harvard's Massachusetts
Eye and Ear Infirmary
Dr Del Vecchio usually requires 30-40 minutes of operating time
to complete the procedure. Absorbable stitches are used to close
the incisions, which may also be taped for greater support. A gauze
bandage may be applied over your breasts to help with healing.
After your breast augmentation surgery
You're likely to feel a bit sore for a few days following your
surgery, but you'll be up and around in the first 24 hours. Most
of your discomfort can be controlled by the medication prescribed.
You will have Foam tape directly on your breasts, a bra over the
breasts, and small bandages in the axilla:

Within two days, the gauze bandages in the axilla can be removed,
and you should leave the foam tape on your breasts a total of 7-10
days. You can remove the surgical bra to shower after two days.
Getting back to normal after breast augmentation surgery
You should be able to return to work within a few days, depending
on the level of activity required for your job. Follow Dr Del Vecchio
advice on when to begin exercises and normal activities. Your breasts
will probably be sensitive to direct stimulation for two to three
weeks and you should avoid much physical contact. After that, breast
contact is fine once your breasts are no longer sore, usually three
to four weeks after surgery. Your scars will be firm and pink for
at least six weeks. Then they may remain the same size for several
months, or even appear to widen. After several months, your scars
will begin to fade, although they will never disappear completely.
Your new look after breast augmentation surgery
For many women, the result of breast augmentation can be satisfying,
even exhilarating, as they learn to appreciate their fuller appearance.
Regular examination by your plastic surgeon and routine mammograms
for those in the appropriate age groups at prescribed intervals
will help assure that any complications, if they occur, can be detected
early and treated. Your decision to have breast augmentation is
a highly personal one that not everyone will understand. The important
thing is how you feel about it. If you've met your goals, then your
surgery is a success.
